Maria's Explication
Alzheimer’s by Kelly Cherry is a description of the deep sorrow associated with watching a parent slowly deteriorate from a dreadful disease called Alzheimer’s. The title of the poem, Alzheimer’s, is the topic described throughout the poem. The poet’s tone throughout the poem is sadness. The first couple of stanzas describe the father’s return from a hospital stay. The twentieth stanza suggests that her father was a musician but no longer is able to remember how to play. The poet’s tone is especially expressed after the twenty-fifth stanza, “Thing he must do, now that he is home, is decide who This woman is, this old, white-haired woman”. This is the poet’s description of her father returning home and not remembering his wife.
I watched my grandmother slowly deteriorate from this dreadful disease, it is a devastating experience for any family to have to endure. Every day was a constant struggle for us as we watched her slowly slipping away.
