Terry's Explication
This poem begins in a way that describes the old man as having an empty head. Although he is going through some stage of Alzheimer’s, he shows his ways of having some sense by remembering the past. Although this past may be a figment of his imagination, he does remember some detail. "This is his house, he remembers it as his," (Cherry 856) shows he knows where he is. Toward the end of the poem, we see that his memory of his family and loved ones has disappeared. Nonetheless, the old man is still determined to figure out who this old lady is standing in the doorway, this being his wife.
